Russian IT giants, including MTS, VK, and Rostelecom, are considering acquiring Russian operating system (OS) developers, according to market participants. Negotiations are underway with Bazalt SPO, Astra, Red Soft, and STC IT ROSA.
The aforementioned companies, with the exception of Rostelecom, declined to comment. A representative of the operator explained that they already have a software developer in their portfolio. This refers to Open Mobile Platform, which develops the Aurora OS.
What is the reason for IT companies' interest in OS development?
The reason why major players are interested in software is the changing conditions. Now that Russia has set a course for import substitution, companies have obligations to ensure the security of critical information infrastructure. This opinion was expressed by the head of NP Russoft, Valentin Makarov. According to him, they want to create their own ecosystems.
Many plan to localize electronics production and add Russian software there, and then organize deliveries to state-owned companies
Another expert called this a logical step. He added that everyone is striving to get into the Ministry of Industry and Trade's register, and for this, their equipment and software must comply with the department's recommendations.
