Workers at the Paks-2 nuclear power plant (NPP) have begun strengthening the soil in the foundation pits where the 5th and 6th power units will be located, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

According to him, about 1.7 million cubic meters of earth were removed from the foundation pits. In early November, builders began to strengthen the soil. This stage is considered key to preparing for the construction of the nuclear facility itself.

The soil is being strengthened to avoid subsidence of the structure, as well as to ensure its stability in the event of an earthquake. The work is being carried out under the supervision of the Hungarian relevant authorities.

Szijjártó noted that in the spring of 2024, a melt localization device will be delivered to Paks-2 from Russia (part of the hermetic shell of nuclear reactors, which is necessary to localize the melt of the reactor core in the event of possible accidents - editor's note www1.ru). It is expected that Rosatom will soon begin manufacturing a complex of buildings at the nuclear facility.

At the Paks NPP (built by Soviet engineers in the eighties), the 1st to 4th power units are currently operating, providing ⅓ of the country's electricity consumption. Rosatom, under the contract, will build the 5th and 6th power units to increase the capacity of the NPP.

Rosatom is implementing projects for the construction of nuclear power facilities, including in Turkey, Bangladesh, and India. Earlier it was reported that parts of the equipment for reloading nuclear fuel began to be supplied to the Turkish Akkuyu NPP .
