Students from the Severodvinsk branch of the Arctic Federal University named after M.V. Lomonosov (SAFU) have developed an underwater mini-robot "Lemming."
"Lemming" is small and uninhabited, very technological, and operates on brushless motors. It is controlled via cable. The data obtained thanks to the digital camera and lighting system is transmitted to the operator through the same cable.
The robot has a single-axis manipulator, with which "Lemming" can perform simple operations underwater.
This device can be used to study flora and fauna or to diagnose the underwater part of ships in the northern seas. It can work in salt water and dive to a considerable depth, as successful tests at the "Arctic Floating University" base have proven.
The developers note that their robot already has analogues in Russia. But so far, no similar underwater robot is available to schools and technology parks due to the high cost of production, and SAFU wants to fix this.
"Lemming" will become simpler and cheaper for mass production; they want to keep the cost of one unit within one hundred thousand rubles. In particular, due to import substitution: currently, many parts have to be purchased in China.
