Students of the Severodvinsk branch of the Lomonosov Arctic Federal University (SAFU) have developed a mini underwater robot named «Lemming».
«Lemming» is small and unmanned, but very technologically advanced, it operates on brushless engines. It is controlled through a cable. The same cable transmits the data obtained thanks to the digital camera and lighting system to the operator.
The robot has a single-axis manipulator, which allows it to perform simple operations underwater.
Such a device can be used to study flora and fauna, or for diagnosing the underwater part of ships in the northern seas. It can work in salty waters and descend to great depths, successful tests at the base of the «Arctic Floating University» have proved this.
The developers note that their robot already has analogues in Russia. But none of similar underwater robots are available to schools and science parks because of their high production cost, and SAFU wants to correct this.
«Lemming» will become easier and cheaper for mass production, they want to limit the cost of one piece to a hundred thousand rubles. In particular, through import substitution: currently many parts have to be purchased in China.
