The Russian "Grifon" project (opto-electronic survey system) will be included in the federal program for creating a global "Sphere" satellite constellation, Roscosmos reported.
The corporation explained that a specialized industry operator will be engaged in the implementation of "Grifon". The project will be financed using external investments.
"Grifon" is a project for an Earth monitoring system based on 136 CubeSat spacecraft (small artificial satellites with dimensions of 10×10×10 cm and a mass of no more than 1.33 kg, which significantly reduces the cost of launching such a device - editor's note www1.ru).
Every 30 hours, the system will receive data from the territory of Russia, and no less than every 38 hours - from the rest of the world. It is noted that "Grifon" will help identify natural phenomena and man-made processes, regulate traffic flows and improve logistics.
"Sphere" will include 5 satellite constellations that provide telecommunications services and 5 constellations for remote Earth observation. The first satellite of the project was launched in October 2022. The launch of two more is scheduled for 2024. Roscosmos claimed that the resolution of the satellites' optics will be so high that with their help it will be possible to see "stars on the epaulettes" of a soldier from space.
