Researchers from Tomsk Polytechnic University have invented a technology for obtaining refractory ceramics [such products are characterized by increased hardness, heat and wear resistance - editor www1.ru] using the decomposition products of pomelo peel, which are formed under the influence of high temperature.

As explained in the university's press service, chemists are very interested in stones, peels and shells of plants, from which pure carbon with various structures can be obtained. Combining pure carbon with certain metals allows for the creation of materials with improved properties. Among such compounds is titanium carbide (TiC).

Scientists from Tomsk have proposed a unique method of obtaining titanium carbide. In particular, the synthesis of TiC was carried out from titanium powder and carbon from pomelo peel without the use of vacuum. This method helped to reduce energy consumption and production time.

The university stressed that the outcome of the scientific work is also an improvement in the processes of processing plant waste. Now researchers plan to apply other types of biochar and manufacture ceramics based on it.

It was previously reported that in Russia, synthetic polymers are being developed that can mimic the properties of living tissue. Scientists hope to replace damaged human soft tissues with their help.
