The Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media reported that the Russian government has supported the agency's initiative, which concerns compensation to those who have suffered from leaks of personal data under the law on turnover fines.
As explained in the ministry, if the company that allowed the leak of data compensates the user for the damage, then in this case reduced turnover fines will be applied to it.
The compensation mechanism will look like this. The company informs the user about the leak of their data and agrees to compensate for the damage suffered. This information is also posted on the State Services.
Within 15 working days, the user has the right to apply through the State Services portal for compensation. The next 20 days are allotted for the company to process applications and calculate the amount of payments.
The user should accept or refuse the offer within a similar period. It is emphasized that if more than 80% of the users who suffered from the leak agree to receive payments, then the company should make them within 5 working days.
