By 2035, 5G networks will cover all Russian cities with a population of 100,000 or more, but Russia lags far behind Europe, the USA, and China in the implementation of 5G

Currently, commercial 5G networks have not been launched in Russia

The Ministry of Digital Development has developed a draft "Strategy for the Development of the Communications Industry for the Period up to 2035." Unfortunately, it does not promise any advanced technologies in the near future.

Thus, according to the project, the deployment of 5G networks in all cities with a population of 100,000 people is planned only by 2035. Meanwhile, according to an Ericcson report, about a billion people worldwide used 5G networks by the end of 2022, and by 2030, according to forecasts, there will be 5 billion 5G users in the world. Around the same time, the introduction of 6G should begin in different countries, but in Russia, the start of commercial operation of 6G is planned only by 2035.

The main range for 5G networks in Russia is named 4800-4990 MHz (with the potential to expand to 4400-4990 MHz). For the development of 5G, the additional need for radio frequency spectrum is estimated at 800 MHz (in the ranges below 6 GHz) and 2 GHz (in the ranges from 6 GHz to 30 GHz).

Domestic cryptographic information protection tools, as well as telecommunications equipment included in the unified register of Russian radio-electronic products, should be used in 5G networks. Actually, this is the reason for the delay in the deployment of 5G networks, since it is necessary to create your own base stations, and no one will sell foreign ones to Russia in the current situation.

At the first stage of the strategy implementation (from 2023 to 2030), it is planned to organize the development and production of a domestic electronic component base required for the creation of 4G/LTE and 5G base stations, as well as the establishment of their mass production. The project also provides for the development and pilot operation of domestic 5G and 6G-Ready equipment and the introduction of the practice of sharing the core infrastructure by mobile operators for the deployment of 5G networks, and by 2035 - 6G.

Meanwhile, in Russia in April of this year, the first domestic 5G base station was developed – they promise to release 100 pieces by the end of 2023.
