By 2035, 5G networks will cover all cities in Russia with a population of over 100,000 people, but in terms of implementing 5G, Russia is significantly behind Europe, the USA and China

At the moment, commercial 5G networks have not been launched in Russia

The Ministry of Digital Development has developed the project «Strategy for the development of the communications industry for the period up to 2035». Unfortunately, it does not promise any advanced technologies in the near future.

So, according to the project, the deployment of 5G networks in all cities with a population of 100 thousand people is planned only by 2035. Meanwhile, according to a report by Ericsson, by the end of 2022, about a billion people worldwide used 5G networks, and by 2030 there will already be 5 billion 5G users. Around the same time, the implementation of 6G should begin in different countries of the world, but in Russia the start of commercial operation of 6G is planned only by 2035.

The main range for 5G networks in Russia is called 4800-4990 MHz (with the potential to expand to 4400-4990 MHz). For the development of 5G, the additional need in terms of radio frequency spectrum is estimated at 800 MHz (in the ranges below 6 GHz) and 2 GHz (in the ranges from 6 GHz to 30 GHz).

5G networks will have to use domestic cryptographic information protection tools, as well as telecom equipment included in the unified register of Russian radio electronic products. In fact, this is associated with the delay in the deployment of 5G networks, as it is necessary to create our own base stations, and foreign ones cannot be sold to Russia in the current situation.

In the first phase of the strategy implementation (from 2023 to 2030), it is planned to organize the development and production of domestic electronic components required for the creation of 4G / LTE and 5G base stations, as well as start their serial production. The project also provides for the development and experimental operation of domestic 5G and 6G-Ready equipment and the implementation of a practice of joint use of infrastructure by mobile operators for the deployment of 5G networks, and by 2035 - also 6G.
