The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, announced that the GAZ Group is going to start producing cars under the legendary Volga brand. The revived serial Volga will appear in 2024.
«Colleagues say that the development of a new model takes about 8-9 months. But we are taking some additional reserve period of time: it is planned to decide on a partner in the near future. Take a year, let's say. By next summer, I think,» Denis Manturov said, answering a question about the timing of the start of production. In other words, the same scheme will be applied to the Volga as to the Moskvich: at the first stage, large-node assembly from Chinese car kits, at subsequent stages, localization.
Despite the fact that GAZ is mainly associated with trucks and commercial vehicles, the company has sufficient competencies for the production of cars. Back in 2006, the company purchased a production complex for the production of cars - for the production of Volga Siber. From 2013 to 2015, Chevrolet Aveo cars were produced at GAZ as part of a contract assembly for General Motors, and from 2011 to 2022, Volkswagen and Skoda cars were contract-assembled for Volkswagen Group Rus at the site in Nizhny Novgorod.
