Artem Sheikin, a member of the Constitutional Committee of the Federation Council, suggested creating an analog of the "Chinese firewall" in Russia. It will make it impossible to circumvent the blocking of unwanted sites.
"In the Russian Federation, in light of unprecedented pressure from Western countries, clear unfriendly policies, I believe an analogue of the 'Chinese firewall' is necessary, which will be able to fully block access to unwanted internet resources, including VPN services, if Russian legislation continues to be ignored," said the senator.
"As practice in recent years shows, self-regulation of social networks and Internet platforms is quite difficult to ensure, a more responsible approach is required to regulate this industry," added Sheikin.
The senator believes that in the Russian Federation there should be "possibilities to restrict the operation of Internet platforms, slow down traffic, in case of failure to comply with national legislation".
