Senior research associate of the laboratory of physicochemical processes in metallurgy and materials at Siberian Federal University Alexander Kosovich reported that the university has found a way to improve Hadfield steel (alloyed steel with high carbon and manganese content).
"The increase in impact toughness of the steel was achieved by optimizing the chemical composition. One can say that as the impact toughness increases, the amount of energy the material can absorb on impact increases. In simple terms: optimized steel will withstand more impact loads when products made from it are in use", - said Alexander Kosovich. The scientist added that the increase in toughness is due to the optimization of the composition of alloying additives. The study has already found practical application at one of the enterprises in the Krasnoyarsk Territory in the production of cone armor for crushers.
