After the departure of many companies from Russia last year, a large shortage of technologies has emerged, in a wide variety of industries. For example, in oil production, only imported rotary steerable systems (RSS) are currently used for directional drilling: they allow controlling the drilling speed and other parameters. But from 2025, the technology is planned to be import-substituted.
According to the head of the oilfield service company "Technologies OFS" (ex-Baker Hughes in Russia), David Gadzhimirzaev, the start of production of the Russian RSS is scheduled for the beginning of 2025, and there is no question of creating a joint venture with foreigners: "We plan to become completely independent in terms of the production of rotary steerable systems. We are analyzing the geography of production location – most likely, it will be Western Siberia."
It is noted that more than half of the components for the production of RSS are now produced in the Russian Federation, the remaining components are planned to be imported from friendly countries.
