Quantum communication technology to be tested on the Russian Orbital Station

This is a distant prospect, considering that the first module of the Russian Orbital Station will be launched only in 2028

The technology of quantum communication is planned to be tested on the Russian Orbital Station (ROS), Roscosmos reported.

RSC Energia and the company "KuSpace Technologies" have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of developing satellite quantum communication technologies. The main focus of the joint work is to expand the possibilities of ROS commercial services for the creation and experimental flight testing of advanced satellite optical communication networks and quantum communication means in open data transmission channels.

However, this is not an immediate prospect. The first module of the Russian Orbital Station — NEM (scientific and energy module) — will be launched only in 2028. And the testing of quantum communications will begin later, as initially all attention will be paid to the adjustment and testing of the station's operating systems.
