The head of Roscosmos, Yuri Borisov, announced that the Russian government has agreed to the space agency's proposal to extend work on the International Space Station project until 2028.
«By decision of the government, the operation of the International Space Station has been extended until 2028,» said Yuri Borisov.
Last year, following the imposition of Western sanctions against Russia, uncertainty arose regarding Russia's continued participation in the ISS project. There were various proposals, including talk of withdrawing from the project after 2024. However, considering that Russia does not have a national orbital station, there is no adequate replacement for the ISS. The most logical step was to extend participation in the project, and this has now been officially announced.
As a reminder, the first stage of deploying the Russian orbital station will begin in 2028 with the launch of the Science and Energy Module (NEM) using the Angara-A5M carrier rocket.
