The Il-80 airborne command post remains one of the rarest special aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces. The machine is based on the wide-body passenger Il-86 and is designed to control troops in situations where ground infrastructure, command posts, and conventional communication lines may be unavailable.

A total of four Il-80s were built. However, the actual official number of aircraft currently in flying condition is not disclosed in open sources. Therefore, it is more accurate not to confuse data on the current serviceability of individual aircraft with the total number of aircraft built.

How the Il-86 was turned into an airborne command post

The first Il-80 took to the skies on May 29, 1985. The flight of the aircraft with special equipment installed took place in 1987, and the machine was adopted into service in 1992. The four aircraft became a special military version of the Il-86 and received a fundamentally different purpose compared to the passenger airliner.

The wide fuselage of the Il-86 proved to be a convenient base for such a project: it was necessary to accommodate not a passenger cabin, but a complex system of communication, control, and operator support.

Outwardly, the Il-80 is quite easy to distinguish from a regular Il-86. There are practically no passenger portholes on the fuselage, a large fairing for special equipment is installed in the front, and additional antenna systems have appeared on the aircraft. This configuration immediately reveals it as an airborne command post, not a passenger airliner.

Why the Il-80 is needed in the air

The main task of the aircraft is to maintain the ability to control the armed forces if ground control points and communication lines are disrupted.

The Il-80 must provide communication and transmit commands to various components of the Armed Forces. In open sources, its capabilities are associated, among other things, with the control of the Ground Forces, the Navy, the Aerospace Forces, and the Strategic Missile Forces.

That is why the Il-80 is usually called an airborne command post, and the unofficial name "Doomsday plane" has become entrenched in the media.

When the machine was created, the possibility of operating in conditions of nuclear weapons use and the failure of ground infrastructure was foreseen. For this, the aircraft received special protection and life support systems, as well as autonomous power sources.

At the same time, a significant part of the characteristics and composition of the Il-80's equipment remains classified. Therefore, the widely encountered figures on the crew size, duration of autonomous operation, and individual parameters of the control complex found on the Internet cannot be automatically considered official.

Il-80s were not left with Soviet equipment

The age of the airframes is only one side of the story. No less important is that the Il-80 control complex has been modernized since the collapse of the USSR.

In May 2019, Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Alexey Krivoruchko announced the completion of research and development work on the modernization of airborne command posts based on the Il-80 and Il-82. At the same time, it was reported that the re-equipment of existing aircraft into a new configuration had begun. As a result of the work, the Aerospace Forces were to receive a second generation of airborne command posts.

The Il-80 represents a rather unusual combination: a Soviet airframe and an updated control complex.

This is fundamentally important for understanding why these aircraft continue to be of interest decades after their creation. For such equipment, the age of the basic airframe itself does not mean the abandonment of the machine if its special equipment is modernized.

One Il-80 became the center of an unusual criminal case

The history of the Il-80's operation received an unexpected continuation in 2020.

Electronic equipment and individual electronic components were stolen from one of the aircraft undergoing repairs in Taganrog. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a criminal case was initiated on the fact of the theft. Later, an Interfax source claimed that the stolen equipment was old and was subject to replacement anyway as part of the aircraft's modernization.

This episode itself does not show the technical condition of the entire Il-80 fleet, but it clearly demonstrates the specifics of the machines: their equipment is significantly more important than the outwardly familiar passenger aircraft airframe.

Why the Il-80 is already being prepared for replacement

However, the modernization of the Il-80 does not mean that these aircraft will remain the basis of airborne command posts indefinitely.

As early as 2019, developers spoke about creating a third generation of VKP based on the Il-96-400. Later, the project of a new airborne command post was linked to the wide-body Il-96-400M.

In open sources, the project is designated as "Zveno-3S". It was reported that the Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the development of a new aircraft in 2018, and in 2021, the construction of the machine began. It is expected that the new airborne command post will have a greater range compared to its predecessor, but the exact characteristics of the project remain classified.

The situation is unusual: four aircraft, created in Soviet times based on the passenger Il-86, are still used in the air control system. At the same time, a new generation based on the more modern Il-96-400M is already being developed.

Today, the Il-80 attracts attention not only as a rare special-purpose aircraft but also as an example of equipment with a much longer life cycle than originally anticipated.
