A few days ago, information appeared on the Web that thenew submarine "Orenburg" of project 09853 was laid down at Sevmash. Presumably, the submarine will be armed with the new Poseidon underwater complex, but what is known about it?

Poseidon is a fully robotic, autonomous, high-speed and deep-sea underwater vehicle with a nuclear power plant for delivering nuclear charges with a diameter of 1.5-2 m, a length of 16-24 m and a mass of about 100 tons.

The stated purpose of the super torpedo is "to destroy important objects of the enemy's economy in the coastal area and cause unacceptable guaranteed damage by creating zones of extensive radioactive contamination that are unsuitable for economic, military and other activities in these zones."

Poseidon can be used as a tactical nuclear weapon against ships and naval bases. The maximum power of the warhead is up to 2 megatons; the concept of creating a tsunami from an explosion is recognized as scientifically unfounded.

The concept of the Poseidon nuclear super torpedo dates back to the T-15 project of the 1950s, which was stopped due to its impracticality.

According toIzvestia, work started at the Makeev State Rocket Center and the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering back in the late 1980s. In the 90s, compact nuclear power plants were created, which made it possible to create underwater vehicles with unlimited range.
