At the Kazan Aviation Plant, as part of the Tu-160M2 construction program, missile carriers are being equipped with an additional rear-view radar station. In addition to standard weapons in the form of cruise missiles, the aircraft also received reverse launch air-to-air ammunition capable of hitting air targets from both the rear and the front.
No details are provided to date. There is also no information on exactly which missiles the new "Swans" are being equipped with. At the same time, it is known that if it is necessary to eliminate an air target in the rear hemisphere, whether it is a missile or a fighter, the launch at them from the rear from the Tu-160M2 will be carried out according to target designation from the tail radar station, from the front - from the nose.
Won't Make You Turn Around
The use of this technology on heavy "strategists" is justified, since if a threat is detected, it will not be easy for a heavy aircraft to quickly turn to the enemy and be the first to launch. Moreover, thanks to this, the missile carrier will be able to leave without fighter escort far beyond the "ribbon".
The Third Aircraft is Being Assembled
The prototype of the modernized Tu-160M2 made its first flight from the airfield of the Kazan Aviation Plant (KAZ) in January 2022, and in December 2022 the second aircraft was sent for testing. To date, both of these aircraft have been adopted by long-range aviation, and the company is actively assembling the third updated strategist of this line.
In the new Tu-160M, more than 80% of units and components have been replaced. As a result of the modernization, the bomber has turned into a modern machine with high efficiency and new combat capabilities.
