The US wants to modernize the protection of Abrams tanks. However, the technologies that the Americans plan to introduce have been used in Russia for a very long time. This was reported by the press service of Rostec.
The new Abrams configuration should include a special coating that reduces thermal signature, as well as additional passive protection elements against FPV drones.
In fact, the new measures of the American military-industrial complex repeat what Russian tank builders have been using for a long time.
The special coating that the Pentagon is talking about is an analogue of the Russian camouflage “Cape”, and additional protection from the upper hemisphere is a “barbecue” type structure.
Prior to this, the Americans adopted the concept of dynamic protection from Soviet engineers. At the same time, it was initially called “outdated”, claiming that combined armor would be sufficient for armored vehicles.
Today, many experts recognize that Russian tanks and other armored vehicles are better adapted to modern combat conditions than their counterparts.
Russian Armed Forces servicemen have repeatedly recorded cases when tanks withstand shell hits, but continue to perform combat missions. Such armored vehicles are highly maintainable and are returned to service each time.
