"New Opportunities with a Limited Budget": The National Interest Analysts Believe in the Success of the Su-75 Program

Military Expert Weichert: The Su-75 is positioned as an inexpensive but effective alternative to the F-35 Lightning II

Russian aircraft designers have encountered problems in developing the single-engine fifth-generation fighter Su-75 "Checkmate". But this does not mean that the project will not be implemented. This opinion was expressed by military expert Brandon J. Weichert in an article for The National Interest.

The Su-75, developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau, was first presented at the MAKS-2021 air show. This is an ambitious attempt to gain a foothold in the global fighter market.

In his opinion, the Su-75 is "an example of how Russia is expanding its capabilities with a limited budget." The fighter is positioned as an inexpensive but effective alternative to the F-35 Lightning II. The cost of the American aircraft is more than $100 million, while the Su-75 is about $25-35 million. The Russian version may attract countries in Asia, Africa, and South America with developing economies.

Rostec is targeting countries such as India, Vietnam, and Argentina, predicting sales of at least 300 units over 15 years. The Su-75 will use components and avionics from the Su-57 to reduce development and production costs.

The delay in the implementation of the Su-75 program, according to Weichert, is due to Western sanctions.

However, Russia should not be underestimated. The Russians have recovered from the sanctions blow to the defense industry and have already adapted to the new conditions. Ultimately, they will still complete the work on the Su-75, it's only a matter of time.

Su-75 characteristics: maximum combat load — 7400 kg, flight range without external fuel tanks — 2900 km at speeds up to Mach 1.8, take-off weight — 18 tons, practical ceiling — 16,500 m.
