The Russian Aerospace Forces has only three Tu-214R aircraft, but their advanced electronic and optical systems give the Russian military a great advantage. This was stated by military expert Brandon J. Weichert in an article for The National Interest.
Russia has proven that it is capable of adapting old Soviet systems for modern conflicts. Now observation, reconnaissance and intelligence are key components of success on the battlefield.
The analyst emphasized that the Tu-214R is an advanced aircraft built on the basis of the civilian version of the Tu-214. It plays an important role in collecting intelligence for Russia.
The aircraft is equipped with the MRK-411 RTK complex, which includes a phased array radar. The Tu-214R is equipped with a ground-penetrating radar that can detect objects hidden underground, under snow, and even under foliage. The equipment is capable of uncovering disguised military facilities of the enemy.
The pilot of the Tu-214R can intercept negotiations, detect a cell phone or detect an enemy radar. This information is used to determine the positions of the enemy for subsequent data transfer to ground troops.
