Russian T-80 main battle tanks will improve their driving performance after being equipped with a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine with 1250 hp. This was pointed out by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
Large-scale production of GTD-1250 engines was resumed at the Kadvy enterprise last winter. The production of power units began against the background of the growing rate of modernization of T-80 tanks of various modifications removed from storage, bringing them to the T-80BVM version, which proved its effectiveness on the battlefield.
The GTD-1250s produced in Kaluga provide the T-80BVM family with an incredible highway speed of up to 85-100 km/h, on dirt surfaces - up to 65 km/h with a power-to-weight ratio of 27.7 to 30.4 hp/ton, which is 45-50% higher than similar indicators of the M1A1 FEP/A2 SEP v3 Abrams MBT.
Russian enterprises today do not produce new T-80s, now the modernization and overhaul of models previously produced at the Omsk Transport Engineering Plant are underway. This combat vehicle was produced from 1979 to 1991, in total more than 10 thousand T-80 tanks of various modifications saw the light. The unsealing of tanks with their adaptation to the modern version began in 2016, but in small batches.
