The development of robots for underwater factories and resource extraction is a promising direction in modern science. This opinion was expressed by the Chairman of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Yury Kulchin.

According to Kulchin, when exploring the ocean at great depths, it is necessary to use robots with artificial intelligence. However, the emergence of such automated systems is hindered by the lack of materials, he added.

There is a problem related to finding special materials that can operate in such conditions, finding mechanisms that can work in this environment, and also the possibility of obtaining energy for robots.

Furthermore, it is irrational to lift resources extracted from great depths out of the water. Therefore, underwater factories should be built where robots will work, Kulchin emphasized.

Some resources on Earth are already depleted, and they can only be found in the ocean, the academician believes. Russian specialists are already actively working on solving these problems. He called the emergence of such technologies 'a matter of decades'.

The Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences previously developed the concept of a federal research program 'Promising methods and means for studying and developing the resources of the World Ocean'. The document has already been submitted to the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources for review. Scientists also maintain contact with companies that are developing oil and gas fields on the shelf, Kulchin concluded.
