The permitted speed on Russian highways may be increased. State Duma deputy Nikolay Novichkov believes that, provided all safety requirements are met, 130 km/h could become the normal speed, and on the most modern sections of highways, speeds of up to 150 km/h could be allowed.
Of course, when talking about autobahns, we must take into account the increased requirements for them. Reliably separated traffic flows, safe interchanges, high-quality pavement, and the ability for emergency services to arrive quickly are necessary. If all these requirements are met, I think 130 km/h can become a normal regime, and on the most modern sections, 150 km/h can also be allowed.
According to the deputy, highways in Russia should gradually form a unified system. This will allow for faster connections between regional centers and key settlements, especially in Siberia and the Far East.
Novichkov noted that a good highway affects not only travel speed. Businesses will be able to deliver products faster, and residents of small towns will have more convenient connections with the rest of the country. Therefore, the parliamentarian believes, autobahns can become one of the factors in territorial development.
In May, the Russian government approved an action plan for the implementation of the Road Safety Improvement Strategy. It provides for the preparation by the Ministry of Transport in 2027 of methodological recommendations for determining, changing, and establishing optimal speed limits for transport on roads.
Currently, according to traffic rules, outside populated areas, the speed limit on roads is usually 90 km/h. On highways, the limit is 110 km/h. However, road owners, if necessary conditions are met, can increase it to 130 km/h.
