Construction of a stand-alone test complex for hydrogen production by water electrolysis has begun at the industrial site of the Kola Nuclear Power Plant in the Murmansk region. Construction is planned to be completed in 2027.

The design capacity of the new facility will be 200 normal cubic meters of hydrogen per hour. The launch will take place in two stages: first, a 50 cubic meters per hour unit and infrastructure for hydrogen storage and handling will be introduced, then the productivity will be increased to full design values. Modern Russian-made equipment will be used in the construction of the complex.

The Kola NPP was chosen as a pilot site due to the availability of reserve capacities, accessible electricity, and developed infrastructure. The plant will use environmentally friendly nuclear energy for electrolysis without hydrocarbon emissions. The produced hydrogen will be used for cooling NPP generators, and will also allow testing technologies for large-scale production, storage, and transportation.
