The government approved an updated Strategy for the Development of the Automotive Industry until 2035, which lists the strengths and weaknesses of the industry.

The strengths include sufficient production capacity, the availability of proprietary automotive platforms and products, and competitive vehicles in certain segments. Scientific, technical, and engineering centers at major automakers, developments in hybrid vehicles, and infrastructure for electric vehicles and electric buses were also noted.

There are no fewer weaknesses: low capacity utilization, a high share of imports in certain segments, and dependence on foreign components and technologies. A number of Russian automotive components lose out to foreign ones in terms of price and quality, there is insufficient investment in R&D, and there is a shortage of engineering and technical personnel and skilled workers. Production facilities lag in robotization, and charging infrastructure is unevenly developed.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin previously stated that the strategy envisages a multiple increase in production in all segments, but this will require solving the problems listed.
