A new method for circumventing Telegram restrictions has reached Mac. Support for WEB Proxy, which previously appeared in Telegram Desktop, has been added to the beta version of a separate Swift client for macOS, "Kod.ru" discovered.
The essence of the technology is masking: the familiar encrypted MTProxy traffic is wrapped inside a regular HTTPS or WebSocket connection via WebView. For the provider, such a connection looks like visiting a regular website through the standard port 443.
At the same time, WEB Proxy does not gain access to correspondence – the intermediate server only transmits already encrypted data further. The domain itself can simultaneously function as a regular website, and the proxy is only enabled for users with the correct address and secret combination.
The MTProxy secret is a unique cryptographic key used for authentication when connecting to a proxy server within the MTProto protocol, developed by the Telegram team.
For the average user, everything should be quite simple: get the WEB Proxy address and secret, add them to Telegram, and connect. There will be no need to set up your own server for this if the owner provides a ready-made proxy.
For now, the technology remains experimental. The public link t.me/webproxy does not yet work as a ready-made connection button, and the timeline for the feature's appearance in stable Telegram versions has not yet been announced.
