The basing point in the Syrian port of Tartus may receive a completely different status. Russia and the republic's authorities have agreed to reorganize the military presence on the Syrian coast, SANA agency reports.
The transition period will take 3 months. Both sides have agreed to revise the functions of military bases and facilities, transforming them into joint training and advanced training centers.
At the same time, the Hmeymim airbase and one of Tartus' commercial berths will be fully transferred to the control of the Syrian state.
It was in Tartus that the Mediterranean squadron of the Russian Navy was based, which in different years included the Project 1164 Atlant-class guided missile cruisers "Moskva" and "Varyag", the Project 1144.2 Orlan-class heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser "Pyotr Velikiy", as well as the Project 11356R Burevestnik-class frigates "Admiral Grigorovich", "Admiral Essen", and "Admiral Makarov".
