How the PS-90A aircraft engine became the basis of energy: UEC spoke about the creation of GTU-12PG-2

The unit has been operating on associated gas since 2004

On August 2, 2004, the first GTU-12PG-2 gas turbine unit developed by ODK-Aviadvigatel was put into operation at a Surgutneftegaz facility, the United Engine Corporation (UEC) reported. The EGES-12S power unit with a single capacity of 12 MW marked the beginning of the widespread use of units based on the PS-90A aircraft gas generator in the oil and gas industry.

The GTU-12PG-2 develops a nominal power of 12.3 MW at the generator terminals with an efficiency of 32.6%. The power turbine operates at 6500 rpm. The overhaul life is 25,000 hours, and the total technical life is 100,000 hours. The unit uses natural gas, associated petroleum gas, and liquid fuel, and the noise level during maintenance does not exceed 80 dBA.

After 20 years, the GTU-12PG-2 remains a sought-after solution. The key advantage of the unit is its operation on associated petroleum gas — this allows oilmen not only to generate electricity for fields but also to effectively utilize a by-product of production, solving environmental problems, UEC stated.

Today, the GTU-12PG-2 is operated by major companies: Surgutneftegaz, Gazprom, Lukoil, Irkutsk Oil Company, and others. For example, at the Vatieganskoye field, a 72 MW power plant based on six such units has been operating continuously since 2008, and over 10 years, it has utilized 1.4 billion cubic meters of associated gas. In aviation, the PS-90A engine is known as the "heart" of Il-96-300, Tu-204, Tu-214 passenger liners and their modifications, as well as Il-76MD-90A transport aircraft and the A-100 AWACS aircraft. Its main advantage is high fuel efficiency and low operating costs.
