The Novosibirsk Electric Locomotive Repair Plant (NERZ) has launched a new machine for dynamic forming of electric locomotive traction motor commutators. The equipment allows to control part parameters directly during processing and reduces the number of operations during repair.
The new machine is designed to work with armatures of traction motors, including NB-418K6 type motors, which are used on 2ES6 electric locomotives. The unit is equipped with a non-contact runout measurement sensor that evaluates the geometry of the part directly during the forming process.
Previously, after this operation, an additional control turning of the commutator was required. It increased the duration of repairs, increased labor costs, and led to additional equipment wear.
After implementing the new technology, NERZ specialists will be able to restore commutator assemblies faster, while maintaining the necessary processing accuracy. The new machine has become part of a complex of equipment that already includes a multi-operational unit for mechanical processing of traction motor armatures and a specialized furnace for their heating.
Traction motors are considered one of the key elements of an electric locomotive: they convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and ensure the movement of the locomotive.
