The average construction time for Russian nuclear submarines of projects 885M "Yasen-M" and 955A "Borei-A" is about eight years – from the keel laying to the delivery of the ship to the fleet after all trials are completed. This pace is considered standard for creating modern nuclear submarines with nuclear power, complex control systems, and high-precision weapons.

The production of new-generation multi-purpose nuclear submarines is carried out by "Sevmash". The enterprise simultaneously implements several projects, including the construction of "Yasen-M" class submarines, which are among the most complex ships of the Russian submarine fleet.

As of late July 2026, the Russian Navy includes one submarine of the basic Project 885 – "Severodvinsk" – and four modernized 885M submarines: "Kazan", "Novosibirsk", "Krasnoyarsk", and "Arkhangelsk". Another submarine – "Perm" – is undergoing the final stages of preparation before being handed over to the fleet.

The construction of serial nuclear submarines remains a lengthy technological process due to the high complexity of their design. Project 885M submarines are equipped with automated control systems, modern target detection means, and universal missile armament. They can carry "Kalibr", "Oniks" cruise missiles, and "Zircon" hypersonic missiles.

At the same time, the period of about eight years is considered typical not only for Russian nuclear submarines. A similar cycle for creating such ships is maintained by leading foreign manufacturers. American multi-purpose nuclear submarines are also built in approximately eight years, while the construction times for some European nuclear submarines can be even longer.

Currently, Sevmash continues the construction of new Project 885M ships, including the submarines "Voronezh" and "Vladivostok". The ninth submarine in the series – "Murmansk" – was laid down in the summer of 2026. The "Yasen-M" series may receive further development after the completion of already planned ships.

The day before, "Pervyy Tekhnicheskiy" reported that at the OSK "Sevmash" enterprise, the nuclear submarine cruiser "Ulyanovsk" of Project 885M "Yasen-M" was launched from the slipway for completion afloat. The submarine is planned to be handed over to the Russian Navy in 2027.
