The Russian Strela-10 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system has begun using an unconventional tactic for intercepting drones – missiles are launched in a "tail-chase" after a receding target. This method allows for hitting aerial objects even when they are leaving the most favorable attack zone and reduces the system's operational time at a position.

The crew of the Strela-10 SAM system from the 74th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade applied this method to destroy aircraft-type reconnaissance drones. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the targets were hit by direct strikes after missiles were launched along a receding trajectory.

The peculiarity of this tactic is that the missile is launched not towards the target, but after it. This option requires precise calculation of the drone's speed and direction of movement, as the system must account for the changing distance to the object during the munition's flight.

After completing the task, the crew promptly changes its firing position and camouflages the combat vehicle. This reduces the risk of the system being detected and maintains its mobility for further use.

The Strela-10 SAM system is designed to protect units from low-flying aerial targets. The system is capable of engaging various types of drones, helicopters, and other objects at low altitudes, using automated tracking and a thermal guidance system.
