Russia's largest mining and metallurgical company, Norilsk Nickel, has changed its precious metals production chain. From July 2026, the processing of copper sludge calcine cake will be transferred from Norilsk to Monchegorsk. This was reported by the manufacturer's press service.
The production cycle for precious metal concentrates in Monchegorsk is significantly shorter, and the level of work-in-progress is lower.
Sergey Shcherbakov, Chief Engineer of Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company (AO Kolskaya GMK – a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel), stated that specialists conducted calculations and tests, assessing technological capabilities. The transfer of processing will allow extracting more precious metals from raw materials using the chemical-metallurgical workshop technology.
For this project, specialists modernized a special workshop at Kolskaya GMK. They replaced calcining furnaces, filters, tank equipment, pumping stations, and pipelines. Investments amounted to almost 500 million rubles.
Olga Severinova, Chief Technologist of the plant, reported that from July, copper sludge calcine cake will be sent to Monchegorsk. As a result, all of Norilsk Nickel's palladium will be produced at these facilities.
Copper sludge calcine cake is an industrial semi-finished product formed during the multi-stage processing of copper-nickel ores. It contains a concentrate of palladium, gold, and platinum.
