For two weeks, social networks have been agitated by panic messages about new cameras under Moscow traffic lights, allegedly issuing fines to pedestrians. The Situational Center of TsODD, commenting on BFM publications, called these rumors untrue.
Ksenia Dolgova, a leading specialist at the center, explained that these are traffic lights with video analytics functions that analyze traffic and pedestrian flows, as well as intersection operations. The device does not record any violations by pedestrians, cyclists, or scooter users.
Smart traffic lights have been operating since October 2025 and have already shown results: in the first weeks of implementation, they accelerated tram passage through intersections by 20%.
The real task of the system is to reduce accidents and optimize traffic, not to hunt for pedestrians. In the coming years, 70% of Moscow's intersections are planned to be equipped with such traffic lights. The panic in social networks turned out to be a classic viral misconception: people mistook an analytical tool for a punitive one.
