Direct replacement of French-Russian SaM146 engines with fully domestic PD-8s on the first Superjet models is impossible. Installing the units will require structural changes to the liners, explained Mikhail Gordin, Rector of Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
The current SaM146s are still flying, but many already require repair of the "hot section" – the high-pressure turbine and combustion chamber. Russia lacks such competencies.
Installing a different, new engine on an existing aircraft without structural changes to the liner is impossible. It initially assumes pre-defined engine options, and all aircraft and engine systems must be coordinated with each other.
Nevertheless, the Ministry of Industry and Trade was going to finance research on replacing SaM146 with domestic PD-8 on manufactured Superjet 100 aircraft.
Specific deadlines for the start of the project have not yet been determined, but as of June, there is no news.
