Zaporizhzhia NPP Regains Second Power Channel: Dniprovska Power Line Repair Completed

For three months, Europe's largest nuclear power plant relied on a single external source of electricity

Repair work has been completed on the Dniprovska power transmission line at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which serves as the station's second external power supply line. This was announced by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation.

According to him, after the completion of restoration work, the line is expected to be connected to the station's power supply system. The restoration has been underway since early June as part of an agreed security regime, with the participation of specialists and under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Despite all six power units of the Zaporizhzhia NPP being in a cold shutdown state, the station still requires a stable external power supply. Electricity is essential for the operation of control, cooling, safety systems, and maintaining the facility's infrastructure.

For the past three months, the station has effectively depended on a single power transmission line – "Ferroalloy-1". This configuration is considered less reliable, as in the event of damage to the sole power supply channel, the facility would have to use backup diesel generators.

The return of the second line enhances the level of power redundancy, which is one of the key principles of nuclear energy safety. For large NPPs, having multiple independent external power sources is considered standard international practice.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP remains Europe's largest nuclear power plant. Its installed capacity is approximately 6 GW. Although the power units are not currently generating electricity, maintaining a reliable power supply to the facility remains one of the most important technical tasks.
