Fuel Shortage in the Country Did Not Make Russians Massively Switch to Electric Vehicles

Sergey Tselikov: Despite a surge in registrations, the electric vehicle market is not yet showing record growth

Against the backdrop of discussions about fuel problems in Russia, the electric vehicle market is not experiencing a sharp jump in demand. This is evidenced by new car registration data shared by Sergey Tselikov, director of the "Autostat" agency.

According to him, buying a new car is rarely spontaneous. It usually takes several months from the emergence of interest to the conclusion of a deal. For electric vehicles, this cycle is often even longer, as most buyers choose their first electric car and spend more time studying its characteristics, charging infrastructure, and ownership costs.

Last week, 231 new electric vehicles were registered in Russia. This is almost double the figure of the previous week, when 123 cars were registered. However, these figures cannot be called record-breaking for the market.

For comparison, in the 19th week of 2026, 236 "electric cars" were registered in the country, and in the 14th week – 253. Moreover, a year ago, 248 electric vehicles were registered during the same period.

Thus, statistics do not yet confirm a massive shift of buyers to electric transport due to the fuel situation. Experts note that if the influence of such factors truly exists, it will only be visible after several months.

The situation with plug-in hybrids looks more interesting. This segment continues to show steady growth and is already more than double last year's figures. Hybrid models allow reducing dependence on traditional fuel without completely abandoning the internal combustion engine, which makes them an attractive compromise for many Russian motorists.
