Putin instructed to find extra-budgetary funds for the construction of new Project 22220 icebreakers

The money will also be used to build a multi-purpose nuclear technology service vessel

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to allocate funds for the construction of the fifth and sixth Project 22220 Arktika-class nuclear icebreakers, as well as a multi-purpose vessel for nuclear maintenance. The financing will primarily come from extra-budgetary sources. This is stated in the list of instructions following the government meeting on April 23, published on the Kremlin website.

Consider the issue of providing state guarantees for financing attracted in 2026-2027, including interest payments.
Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation

The instruction is addressed to the Government of the Russian Federation, the Central Bank, Rosatom, and the state corporation VEB.RF. A report on the work done must be submitted no later than June 15, 2026. The head of the Cabinet of Ministers Mikhail Mishustin, the Chairman of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina, and the Director General of Rosatom Alexey Likhachev have been appointed responsible.

Project 22220 icebreakers are the largest and most powerful nuclear-powered vessels in the world. The lead icebreaker "Arktika" was commissioned in 2020. Later, "Sibir", "Ural", and "Yakutia" were built. Currently, the vessels "Chukotka" and "Leningrad" are under construction at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg.
