First power unit of BelNPP stopped for scheduled maintenance

Specialists will check key reactor systems for safe operation

On April 27, the first power unit of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant was taken offline for scheduled maintenance. BelNPP operational personnel disconnected the equipment in agreement with the system operator – this is a planned event necessary to maintain the reliability of the power unit.

Currently, repair service specialists are working on site. They are diagnosing turbines, checking automation and protection systems, and updating components nearing the end of their service life. All work is proceeding according to the approved schedule and under the control of technical supervision.

Preventive shutdowns are standard practice for nuclear power plants. They allow for early detection and elimination of potential malfunctions to avoid emergency situations in the future. During the repair period, the load has been redistributed among other generation sources, so consumers in Belarus will not notice changes in power supply.

After all procedures are completed, personnel will conduct commissioning tests and return the power unit to operation. The exact dates for connection to the grid will be announced additionally – they depend on the equipment's readiness.

BelNPP, located in the Astravets district of Grodno region, is the first nuclear power plant in Belarus. The plant is equipped with two power units with VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors. The total electricity generation since the start of operation has exceeded 60 billion kWh.
