Power Unit No. 1 of the Akkuyu NPP is 99% ready

Rosatom and Turkey have synchronized the schedule for the launch of the first nuclear power plant in the republic, with a mandatory start in December 2026

Electricity supply from the first power unit of the Akkuyu NPP may start as early as October 2026, while the mandatory commissioning date is set for December of the same year. This was announced by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, answering questions from journalists.

According to the minister, the October date represents an optimistic scenario, as hundreds of different tests and checks need to be carried out after the completion of construction work.

The technical readiness of the first power unit is estimated at 99%, but the final stage of commissioning remains a critical stage, on which the actual start date of generation depends.

Earlier, the head of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, also designated December 2026 as the deadline for the launch of the first unit. The Turkish side confirms its intention to adhere to this schedule, given the strategic importance of the facility for the national energy system.

Akkuyu NPP will be the first nuclear power plant in the history of Turkey. The NPP includes four power units with VVER-1200 generation 3+ reactors, each with a capacity of 1200 MW. After reaching full design capacity, the facility will cover a significant part of the base load in the republic's power system.
