Double Control: Ozon Closes Loopholes in Online Energy Drink Purchases

Verification goes through Max: first online, then upon receipt

Ozon is strengthening control over purchases with age restrictions. Starting April 6, the marketplace will begin testing a new double age verification system — using the Max messenger.

Now you will have to confirm your age twice. The first stage is directly when placing an order: if there are energy drinks in the basket, the user will be asked to pass verification through "Digital ID" in Max. The second stage is upon receipt: you will need to show a QR code from the application, which will be scanned by the courier or employee of the pick-up point.

Previously, everything was simpler — age was checked only upon delivery. Now Ozon is transferring part of the control to the purchase stage in order to reduce risks and make the process more transparent.

The new mechanism is being launched in test mode and will only be available to a portion of users for now. If the experiment proves successful, it may be extended to other categories of goods for which age restrictions apply.
