Southeast Asian Foreigners Consider Purchasing Russian Submarines

The Indonesian Navy is interested in the prospective acquisition of Russian submarines and other military equipment. This was announced by the Commander of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral Muhammad Ali, during a visit to the ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet, which are located in the port of Tanjung Priok in Jakarta.

In fact, the Indonesian Navy has long used Soviet equipment since Soviet times—not only ships, but also aircraft, as well as submarines. And in the future, we would like to re-acquire Russian equipment—including submarines, especially modernized Project 636 "Varshavyanka" submarines.

The Admiral personally inspected the diesel-electric submarine "Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky" of Project 636.3, which joined the detachment of ships of the Pacific Fleet. After the tour, he left a note in the book of honorary visitors, where he emphasized the importance of interaction between the fleets of the two countries to maintain stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

During the meeting, the parties exchanged memorable souvenirs. Muhammad Ali also expressed his willingness to visit Vladivostok—the main base of the Pacific Fleet—and invited Russian sailors to Bali for informal communication and exchange of experience.

Earlier, a detachment of Pacific Fleet ships made a business call to the Indonesian capital. The immediate plans include joint maneuvers and training exercises for crews, which will allow them to practice elements of interaction in neutral waters.
