UMO 5 Electric Car to Switch to Domestic Battery

Initially, the Chinese "Heart" of the Electric Car Will Become Russian

Electric vehicles in Russia are taking another step towards localization. A domestic battery is being prepared for the UMO 5. While the car currently uses imported solutions, the key component is planned to be replaced with a Russian one by 2027 — from development to production.

The new battery is being developed by the companies "EM Rus" and "Renera", which is part of the "Rosatom" structure.

The developers plan to maximize the localization of key components. The new battery is intended to be installed not only on the UMO 5, but also on other models that are already under development.

The head of "EM Rus", Ilya Rashkin, clarified that production will be organized at the facilities of "Renera".

Currently, the UMO 5 is equipped with a Chinese battery with lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry. It is this battery that is planned to be replaced with a new development in the future.

The UMO brand appeared in February at the "Moskvich" plant site. The launch was attended by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, Denis Manturov, and the Mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin.

The first model was an urban electric crossover, designed, among other things, for use in taxis. The project aims to localize key components and reduce dependence on imported solutions.

The UMO 5 is built on the basis of the Chinese electric vehicle GAC Aion Y Plus of the 2025 model, but the Russian version has undergone deep adaptation.

Model specifications:

  • electric motor with a capacity of 204 hp;
  • battery capacity of 63.2 kWh;
  • range of 400–420 km on a single charge (according to Russian tests);
  • maximum speed — 160 km/h.
