"Shadow" versus Starlink: Russia has found a way to provide communications for drones via space

Denis Fedutinov: it is necessary to use the infrastructure of geostationary communications satellites

Using the already existing infrastructure of geostationary communications satellites will help solve the issue of creating an analogue of the Starlink communications system in Russia. This opinion was expressed by leading expert in the field of unmanned aviation Denis Fedutinov.

According to him, this is the path taken by the developers of the covert jam-resistant communications system "Shadow," which is already being deployed to provide communications with stationary and mobile objects.

The company Byuro 1440 has also begun operations; it plans to deploy in low Earth orbit a constellation of about 300 satellites of the Rassvet-R line, Fedutinov recalled.

However, the project is being carried out more slowly than planned, and it cannot be ruled out that the deadlines will continue to drift to the right.

The specialist emphasized that in Russia they understand the potential of using satellite communications systems, including for controlling unmanned aerial vehicles.

In addition, attempts are being made to replace Starlink with a new system of stratospheric drones in the Argus project. However, the necessary legislation has not yet been adopted for them, RunAvia flight safety service head Andrei Patrakov explained to The First Technical.
