A discussion around the SJ-100 unfolded in the Indian segment of the internet after the airliner was showcased at the international Wings India 2026 exhibition. According to some in the audience, the aircraft's characteristics allegedly fall short of its competitors.
One user with the nickname Vipin recalled that the SJ-100 had been criticized for high maintenance costs, fuel consumption, and the use of outdated, non-Russian technologies. He did not fully elaborate on what he meant by "non-Russian" technologies.
Another subscriber doubted the ability of India's industry to organize SJ-100 assembly within the country.
We still have a long way to go to master the art of producing anything worthwhile. India is taking on too much. Products manufactured here are worse than those made in China.
Another participant in the discussion, Kanwaldeep Singh, gave a harsher assessment of the economic side of the project. He called the assembly of the SJ-100 "another form of sunk cost".
Professionals were satisfied with the Russian SJ-100. An employee of Max Aero Engines Private Limited, Suvendu Kumar Dash, emphasized that it "looks magnificent".
