Fraud Under the Guise of Couriers: Attackers Come Up With a New Scam

Attackers adapt their "stories" to the usual scenarios of goods delivery for victims

Recently, fraudsters have begun to actively use the name of the courier service CDEK to deceive Russians. This was stated by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications. According to him, the attackers pose as couriers and adapt their stories to the delivery scenarios that people are used to.

If earlier attackers most often pretended to be employees of banks, the prosecutor's office or the Central Bank, now they have switched to logistics companies, with which most Russians regularly interact. Scammers try to gain the trust of Russians, as most have experience receiving parcels.

The peculiarity of the new scheme is that it is based on familiar life situations. For example, a person may be expecting delivery from a marketplace and will not doubt a call from an alleged courier. The task of fraudsters: to obtain a confirmation code from the victim from an SMS, which opens access to a bank account or a portal of public services.

Nemkin stressed that no courier service requests secret codes remotely. All checks occur only at the time of actual delivery of the parcel. Any such request should be perceived as a signal of fraud. In such a situation, the deputy recommends immediately ending the conversation and independently calling the official delivery service at the number indicated on the website.
