Schoolchildren's batteries are running low: Russia is testing the purchase of energy drinks using biometrics

The pilot project will save adult buyers from having to present a passport

A pilot project to confirm age when buying and delivering energy drinks online using biometrics will be launched in Russia before the end of the year. This was announced by the head of the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT), the operator of the Unified Biometric System, Vladislav Povolotsky.

According to him, the service will allow the user to purchase a product with an age limit without presenting a passport or driver's license. The verification will take place automatically using biometric data. Now, experts are considering two scenarios: confirming the age at the time of placing the order or upon receipt of the purchase.

We expect that the pilot will confirm the hypothesis about the market's readiness for online sales using biometrics. This will exclude the possibility of minors buying energy drinks

The system is being created on the basis of the Unified Biometric Platform, which is already used by banks for remote customer service. Now they want to expand its capabilities for the online retail sector.
