UEC: Unique thrust reverser grilles with electric drive invented for the PD-14 aircraft engine

Carbon fiber grilles are lighter than titanium ones — the entire complex weighs less than 50 kg

Perm Design Bureau "UEC-Aviadvigatel" has developed innovative grilles for the thrust reverser of the new Russian PD-14 aircraft engine made of Russian-made carbon fiber, the United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec) said.

Such grilles are much lighter than titanium ones — with a grille ring diameter of up to two meters, the entire set weighs less than 50 kg.

The latest technologies guarantee strength — the grilles are made of continuous carbon fiber, have a cellular monolithic structure and can withstand temperatures from -55 to +110 °C.

The thrust reverser of the new domestic PD-14 aircraft engine is for the first time in Russia made with an electric drive, the corporation reminded.

The aircraft engine reverse is necessary to reduce the speed of the aircraft. When it is turned off, the gas flow comes from the engine nozzle, creates thrust and pushes the aircraft forward. When the reverse is turned on, the thrust vector of the engine changes — the gas flow jets are redirected towards the direction of the aircraft's movement and reduce its speed.

Earlier www1.ru reported that a MiG-29 fighter jet was put up for sale in Perm: anyone can buy it.
