Oncosurgeons at NMIC named after Academician Meshalkin performed the first operation in the country to install a fully Russian modular lower limb prosthesis. The development belongs to the center's scientists and a Novosibirsk manufacturer.
The first patient was 36-year-old Alexander. A tumor in the femur was discovered after a knee fracture. Without treatment, the disease destroys the bone, leading to disability. Surgery with endoprosthetics allows maintaining mobility. The main advantage of the modular design is flexibility during surgery. The surgeon can change the resection parameters and select components right during the process.
The operation was successful. The patient is now recovering and can already move with crutches with partial support on the operated leg. Next, he will undergo rehabilitation under our supervision.
Previously, the clinic used imported analogues, but now they are being replaced by Chinese products, which have disadvantages and limitations. Russia needs about 2000 such prostheses annually, but only 700 are made. Production, including sterilization and packaging, has been established in Novosibirsk. The technology is ready for mass use.
