Perm Polytechnic University has created a unique machine vision-based application that helps users perform physical exercises correctly and rewards them with discounts. The prototype of the application is already ready, and its launch is scheduled for 2025.
The application developers noticed that young people are increasingly preferring computer games to sports.
The idea for the project came about in school when I was exercising on outdoor sports grounds. I often noticed that there were fewer and fewer young people there. The guys around me boasted about how many hours they were racking up in computer games, and it occurred to me that people's sports motivation could be raised by getting discounts on various goods and services. If everyone has an account in an application that counts statistics for workouts and gives pleasant bonuses, the same teenagers, instead of competing for hours in video games, will compete for hours of training, and the world around them will gradually begin to improve.
In order to restore interest in physical activity, it was decided to create a system that would not only teach, but also motivate users.
The application uses machine vision technology, which allows the smartphone camera to record the performance of exercises such as squats or push-ups. Algorithms analyze the correctness of the execution and offer real rewards for achievements - from discounts on sportswear to offers from cafes and massage studios.
The development team has already attracted 16 partners and plans to increase this number to 50 in order to make the application more useful for a wide audience.
The system not only tracks the accuracy of exercises, but also offers individual tasks depending on the level of training. In the future, the application will be supplemented with video instructions, a voice assistant and other functions to become a full-fledged assistant for training without the need for special equipment.
