This week marks 55 years since the release of the first VAZ-2101 "Zhiguli" cars. On April 19, 1970, six cars rolled off the assembly line of the new plant in Togliatti, becoming a symbol of the Soviet automotive era. This day marked the beginning of mass production of popular passenger cars in the USSR, making the "Kopeyka" a cult model.
The first VAZ-2101s were painted in blue and red, symbolizing the flag of the RSFSR. The release was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin. The car, created on the basis of the Italian Fiat 124, became the first personal transport for many families.
In honor of the anniversary, AvtoVAZ presented a video dedicated to the evolution of its models — from the "Kopeyka" to the modern Lada Iskra. The serial assembly of Lada Iskra is expected to start on April 19.
